How to get advice ... and feed your imagination.

Once I had started planning to go grönabandet so many questions came up my mind. Though I am not without hiking experience I needed advice of all kind, concerning equipment, the trail, food and water supply and many other things. So I got back into contact with one of the hikers I had met on my summer tour, Svante Sundelin. Svante is at my time of life, he hiked grönabandet from north to south, finished in October 2016. Meanwhile I am in frequent email contact with him. You'll find a lot of useful information on his website:

For further inspiration and imagination on what the trail looks like have a look at the photos of the northern linneas - what a wonderful trail name -,  two sisters who hiked grönabandet from south to north, from Grövelsjön to Treriksröset in 2016. I met one of the sisters - Karin - at Teusajaurestugorna.
Foto Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linnea
I remember very well ... I had a nearo day, had only walked the nine kilometres from Kaitumjaure and due to an early start had already arrived before noon. So I enjoyed the sunny and warm afternoon lazying on a bench in front of the huts with a mug of coffee just looking at the beautiful scenery... when she came rowing across the lake. She took her time for lunch and - very much to my liking - for a long chat with me before she headed on. What I found out only later ... when I looked at grönabandet website after my trip, both sisters are obviously keen photographers with an eye and an idea of what makes a good photo. So, have a look.

A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving. – Lao Tzu

Jan schreibt mir:

Bin gespannt!

He who would travel happily must travel light. – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.  Cesare Pavese

How to blog while being on the way? (See post 9) Svante's suggestion is to make notes during the trip on the iPhone using notes. And then just copy and paste them once you are online again. So this is worth trying.

I've tried and indeed, this seems to work all right. :) Might need little editing concerning formats though. And I have to think about the energy supply for the iPhone. There are additional battery packs.

Got a to-do-list for the grönabandet application today.

So I paid the registration fee accordingly and agreed to the terms and conditions concerning the use and publication of photos, the experience and whereabouts on Facebook and other media during the trip.
In the end I will have to send some interesting photos stating place and photographer.

And I will send grönabandet the Spot link in beginning of July, in good time before my trip, so we can check if it works all right. I will also put a link on this blog, of course.

Furthermore, what I would like to to is... depending on internet connection and device during the trip I will try to keep my blog up to date at sections (like Abisko, Kvikkjokk, Åre, etc.). Still thinking how I can cope... I have tried the iPhone, ... too circumstantial. That probably means I need to get access to a computer at the end of each stage of the journey.

Bought a gps messenger (Spot Gen 3) the other day. Using one is part of the grönabandet safety regulations; apart from that... it makes sense to me since I am going alone, also in quite remote areas. And I don't want anyone at home to be unnecessarily worried. According to other hikers' blogs there will be days when I do not see or meet anyone at all.

But these devices may also cause trouble...
During my hike in summer I met Juste from Lithuania at Aktse stugorna (Rapadalen). We were talking the general trail talk, about the weather - it was wet and cloudy - and if it was worthwhile going to Skierfe to see Rapadalen in that kind of weather, also about maps and gps etc. I had not seen a gps messenger before. So she showed me her Spot and explained the different functions including help and S.O.S. button.

Some time later in the afternoon the mountain police was looking for her. She got excited: Did I press the S.O.S. button? Did I leave it on? And quickly checked... No, her boyfriend had been worried about her whereabouts; maybe she had forgotten to send a message about staying in the hut - it was a rainy day - for another zero day. So she then sent the position with an I'm OK! message. That is how I got to know the Spot gps messenger and all its functions. Thank you, Juste!

I activated and tested my Spot right away. All functions - well, I did not press the S.O.S. button - seem to work quite all right; my tracky, as I call the device, will be tested on other journeys first.

Later, just before I actually start the hike, I will set a link find me on this blog. It will show my actual position on the trail and my progress for the last seven days on a map. Messages like I am OK, or Need a rest, staying here another day. can also be published.

Here is a survey of functions:

Sent my entry to grönabandet. Starting date 2017-07-21 at Treriksröset. That will be a different kind of life for two and a half months. In the end it was a quick decision...after all the planning during the last weeks. So much time still to get ready, prepare my food list and the proper equipment, get some training ...;) So if you have some advice to give... do not hesitate to comment.

I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train. – Oscar Wilde

Die GPS Route steht - alle sechs Etappen (siehe basic information - my trail - stages 1-6).

Skierfe and Rapadalen - there are magic  places I'd like to see again in good weather.

Tjäktjajakka - near Kaitumjaurestugorna
Padjelanta at a far distance

5

One of the alternative routes - much less frequented - follows Nordkalottleden and later Padjelantaleden to Kvikkjokk. But it takes more time and no chance to buy food on the way except for Ritsem.

You'll never walk alone

Once I decided to go and started planning I began to feel the challenge,
and I got an idea of the stamina and the courage I'd need.
It is a challenge - physically and mentally. I checked the grönabandet website.
This summer 12 hikers reached the final destination, 7 did not finish and three
are still on their way.

Many things can happen - on the way, at home, ...

When you walk through a storm
hold your head up high
and don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm there's a golden sky
and the sweet silver song of a lark.

The trail - grönabandet - is not a fixed or defined trail like other European long distance trails, in many areas there are different options. It seems reasonable to follow Nordkalottleden and Kungsleden in the beginning, but later ... between Hemavan and Are?   ...I will have to study maps and blogs. Where did other hikers go?

Ich geh meine eigenen Wege
ein Ende ist nicht abzusehen.
Eigene Wege sind schwer zu beschreiben,
sie entstehen ja erst beim Gehen.

What direction should I go?
Somehow it seemed natural to me to start in the south and head north, going away, exploring ...but there are some odds.
According to other obligations in the early summer I will start 20 July 2017. My hiking experience in Lapland tells me that - due to the path, weather and personal constitution - it is quite hard to go 20 kms every day - 1200 kms in 60 days - two months. You also need some zero days or nearos, days when you don't walk or only little distance. Well, I do.

Consequently I worked out a plan of 75 days - I know, of course, that other hikers managed in 60 or even less than 60 days. But I guess the whole trail will take me two and a half months, I won't reach the final destination before the beginning of October. Finishing the hike would be at risk in the north due to wind, cold or even snow at that time of the year.
So I will start from Treriksröset heading down south hopefully keeping pace with the fall. ;) And - as an extra challenge - to make it in 68 days would be great - a day for each year of my life.

Going south is a good idea ...the sun will shine into my face and the shadows will fall behind me.

Being a keen photographer I know I will enjoy a favourable light showing spectacular views with the grazing rays of the sun ahead of me.

The idea of doing a long distance hike has haunted me for quite a while, rather years than months. The first time this idea came to my mind was in the mid 90s, my son and I were on a winter tour with friends heading north from Grövelsjön.
Watching the film recently and then reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed, the story of a young woman going the Paciific Crest Trail was fascinating and inspiring.

With little but some hiking experience with a full backpack, Mallorca - hiking along the Serra de Tramuntana, Menorca - Cami de Cavalls, several winter and a summer tour in Lapland, it then took only little - like meeting other hikers like Juste,  Karin or Svante on their way - to get me going. I only talked to them for a short while. How old are you? How long will you wait? Ok. I will turn 68 during the hike. Time to go.
This blog will accompany me planning and going the grönabandet (not in winter though, the vitabandet). I will write in English and / or German. The green ribbon is a trail of more than 1300 kms along the mountainous areas of Sweden between Grövelsjön in the south and Treriksröset in the north, the border triangle of Norway, Finland and Sweden. Go simple. Go solo. Go now. is a quotation from Paddling North by Audrey Sutherland. So let's get started...
